Is the iPhone arriving in September 5^th? According to the latest rumors published by iPhoneItalia, it received news from a “very reliable source” who claims that the next iPhone will be launched on Swisscom’s network in October 5^th. Now that’s not the whole story. Apparently the October 5^th date is the “rest of the world” date: one month after the US release date which is said to be September 5^th. The source of this news? A senior executive at Swisscom (a Swedish carrier).
It’s hard to separate truth from fiction here, but if it’s true, this is the first time we have a definite date for the next iPhone’s release. It lines up nicely with all the previous rumors we’ve heard so far about a September release date (unfortunately in this case it isn’t global). The source also never mentioned if it was going to be the iPhone 5 or 4S (neither of which are confirmed at the moment either). With September a little more than a month away, we should expect some sort of announcement soon if the September 5^th release date is to be believed. What do you think?

How Bin Laden Sent Emails While in Hiding

Osama bin Laden was able to send emails and circumvent intelligence agencies’ surveillance for years without ever going online himself, the Associated Press reports, quoting sources from the U.S. intelligence community.

Bin Laden wrote the text of emails on his computer at his home in northern Pakistan, then had a courier copy it to a thumb drive and send the message from a remote Internet cafe. For incoming emails, the process was reversed. Using this method, bin Laden was able to write a very large number of emails without being electronically tracked.

Although this meticulous way of communicating helped bin Laden stay in hiding for so long, it also helped U.S. intelligence operatives retrieve a huge amount of data. After killing bin Laden, Navy SEALs recovered about 100 flash drives that contained much of his email communication.

The U.S. government has enlisted Arabic speakers from the intelligence community to help examine the contents of the drives. So far, they’ve discovered a number of email addresses and phone numbers, and the information will likely lead to subpoenas of Internet service providers and additional investigations around the globe.

Nikon D5R Concept Camera Features Rotating Sensor and Viewfinder

Illinois industrial design student Ned Mulka created this Nikno D5R concept camera for his senior thesis design project. While the design itself may be pretty iffy for a camera, the main idea behind it is pretty interesting — instead of having to rotate the camera itself for portrait orientation photos, why not only rotate the sensor, mirror, and viewfinder? An even crazier design would involve only rotating the sensor, allowing the camera to shoot any orientation without having to change how you hold the camera — though this would probably be an engineering nightmare for the camera makers.

Looks like the two Silicon Valley giants, Facebook and Google aren’t going to give up their ground so easily as the war rages on, with the former requiring app developers to use only in-app advertising from approved vendors. Of course, it is no surprise that Google is not on the list. Apparently, the social network giant has mentioned that it has modified its rules and requires apps with in-app advertising to only use Facebook-approved companies, as well as other companies who are willing to sign off on the company’s Advertising guidelines. Both Adsense and Double Click are not on the list, and does it come as no surprise that they both belong to the largest advertising company on the Web? What do you think of this move – will Google be doing anything down the road as a retaliatory measure?

After tens of millions of downloads of last year's beta, Microsoft has shipped the release candidate of Internet Explorer 9. The latest iteration of Microsoft's new browser boasts a few new features, a refined user interface, better performance, and improved standards compliance.

Perhaps as a testament to the success of its platform preview program and beta release, the changes are, for the most part, quite subtle. The platform previews have allowed Web developers to track the progress of the browser's core rendering engine, and to submit bugs and feedback to the company; thus, when the beta was released, there were few surprises in the browser's treatment of webpages.

The new user interface was the big surprise of the beta: taking a leaf from Chrome's book, Internet Explorer 9's user interface is a pared down, minimal affair, designed to be much less intrusive and to put the focus squarely on websites rather than the browser itself.

By the way, the social networking aspect is actually an official competition rather than another way to kill time. You see, the player is allowed to enter in his or her neighborhood of choice, and if he or she wins, it is worth 100 points. On January 28th, the neighborhood with the most amount of points will attend an exclusive party with the band OK Go on February 5th.

Now here’s a good question: why aren’t all bus systems in all major cities as hooked up as this one is in San Francisco? Man, it is almost enough to make me want to ride the bus for a change.

Flood in Brisbane destroys retro game console collection

If you’re an avid collector of retro video game consoles you’ll probably feel the pain of this poor guy in Brisbane, Australia. Amidst the recent floods that have been happening in that part of the world, the latest one totally wrecked his lifelong collection of retro gaming controls. PC-Engines, old Segas, Nintendo Game & Watch handhelds, game cartridges – you name it, he probably had it (maybe even more than one) – were all gone with the flood. What was once an impressive collection of classic pieces of hardware is now a bunch of soaked, muddied, and worthless boxes. Such an unfortunate disaster that had to happen to him. Well, at least he’s safe and sound. Something tells me he won’t be starting another collection in the near future. I wonder if his consoles can be saved if they were cleaned and dried carefully?

Sony Launches Double Full HD 3D Camcorder : CES 2011

Is Facebook worth that money?

Facebook has raised $500 Million from Goldman Sachs and an Russian Internet investment group Digital Sky Technologies in a deal valuing the social networking site at $50 Billion, the New York times reported citing people involved in the transaction.
This deal has made Facebook worth more than companies like Yahoo, eBay and Time Warner.

Representatives for Facebook, Goldman and Digital Sky Technologies all declined to comment.Facebook's competition with search giant Google has intensified more with this deal. Now why a financial giant like Goldman Sachs would invest so much in a social networking company is yet to be uncovered. But not for long. The pressure on Facebook will soon make them roll out their future plans..
